DESIGN AND PROJECT MANAGER AT BLOOM DESIGN STUDIO

DAVID BLOOM

We spoke with David from Bloom Studio about a practice defined by passion, a personal touch, and a comprehensive service that encompasses everything from design to execution. In this interview, David reflects on the fusion of architecture and interior design, the importance of detail and personalization, and the role of technology as an ally—without ever replacing human sensitivity.

Tell us about your studio. How did it come about, and what are the values that define your approach to architecture and design?

The studio was founded at the beginning of the century, when real estate development was the driving force of the country. I worked on a project with Pedro Guillen, and the synergies were excellent, as we combined technical expertise with creativity, and we began collaborating. Shortly after, Jordi Garrigos joined us, bringing a significant advantage to project management; and since then, we have evolved to offer a comprehensive service, with projects where we handle every detail.

We understand architecture and design as the 'dream' of those who entrust us with what is probably one of the most important projects of their lives, and the 'closeness' of a comfortable, trustworthy, and even friendly environment. Based on these two values, we begin the process of listening to and understanding their needs, which leads us to design and create dreams.

Personalization is key in high-end architecture. In your projects, how do you ensure that each space reflects the identity and lifestyle of your clients?

Earlier I mentioned details, and personalization is full of them, but we can't limit ourselves to mere aesthetics. The difference must also be functional, otherwise it will lead to architecture that is highly visual but also problematic. Although every client is different, from those who have very clear needs to those who are completely open to advice, they all seek the same thing: a team that advises them from beginning to end to personalize the home to their needs. In our case, we are a relatively small firm focused on tailor-made projects, which means not taking on many projects and concentrating intensely on each one. We are characterized by the level of personalization and the use of 'improvisation' during construction, when it is easier for the vision to emerge and 'invent'.

Architecture and interior design go hand in hand. How do you integrate both worlds into your projects to achieve a coherent and harmonious design?

Creativity is innate, and while I believe it's not essential for an architect to be highly creative, it is for an interior designer. Therefore, at our studio, we understand that any high-level project requires a strong architectural team and a creative team working together, seamlessly blending both fields in every detail.

What makes an architectural project unique, in your opinion? How does a project's location influence its concept and execution?

Architecturally, and beyond aspects like location or views, it's the details that make the difference and make a project unique. Location is a determining factor, as each place has its own architecture, both in terms of design and materials, as well as the identity of many architecture firms. In our case, the studio's style is clearly influenced by the Mediterranean character.

Technology is revolutionizing architecture with AI, virtual reality, and 3D printing. Do you think algorithms will redefine the creative process, or will human vision remain irreplaceable?

New technologies will change the future of architecture, serving as helpful tools that will add more ideas, speed, and possibilities. AI works by collecting vast amounts of data, but it lacks the sensitivity, objectivity, and critical thinking of a human being.

Another tool that is still not very affordable due to its high cost, but which may be very useful in the future, is virtual reality, since it allows the client to see their future house in real size and with every detail.

When tackling a project, what benefits does Gunni & Trentino offer you?

We believe it's essential to surround ourselves with the best, which is why we have a team of industry professionals and specifiers we've been loyal to for many years—a key factor in our success. Gunni & Trentino is a prime example of this, providing top brands across all product categories, a wide range of catalogs, and personalized advice that ensures seamless coordination and follow-up, making you feel right at home. With an excellent and highly qualified team, Gunni & Trentino allows us to unify various sectors with a single specifier and deliver the same level of professionalism.

Tell us about your latest collaborations. Which project would you highlight? Why?

I would highlight one house in particular, due to the challenge posed by its tight deadline and how, without the help of all the professionals involved in the project, it wouldn't have been possible. In this project, we decided to use a novel material with a high degree of complexity in certain areas, which required constant on-site support from Gunni & Trentino and the supplier.

To conclude, is there any architectural project or concept that you haven't yet had the opportunity to bring to fruition and would like to realize in the future?

I really enjoy what I do and I don't need anything more, but if I had to choose a future project it would be a unique building in Barcelona, one that would be a symbol of identity for the city and leave a mark of our studio.
