Robert Dudley Best was a pioneer of modern design in the United Kingdom, whose legacy lives on through his iconic Bestlite lamp. Born in 1892 in Birmingham, he inherited the management of Best & Lloyd, a historic lighting company. However, his vision went beyond traditional lamps: after studying industrial design in Düsseldorf and Paris, and deeply influenced by the Bauhaus and figures such as Walter Gropius, he championed a functional, modern, and ornament-free aesthetic.

In 1930, Best returned to England with a clear goal: to produce a design that harmonized technical innovation with formal elegance.
