ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Franco Albini and Franca Helg

Franco Albini (1905–1977) was one of the leading figures of Italian Rationalism and a master of modern architecture. From his early work alongside Gio Ponti to his groundbreaking installations at the Milan Triennale and his furniture pieces that became icons of Italian design, such as the Veliero bookcase and the Luisa chair, Albini combined structural rigor with a pure aesthetic sensibility. His methodical approach, which balanced poetry and technique, made him a central figure of the European Modern Movement. By mid-century, his work encompassed both interior design and urban architecture, with such emblematic projects as the stations on Line 1 of the Milan Metro.

From 1951, his path became intertwined with that of Franca Helg (1920–1989), a Milanese architect who worked alongside him on fundamental projects such as the Rinascente in Rome and the museums of Genoa. Helg was a key figure in the development of a sensible and functional architecture, and after Albini's death, she continued his legacy alongside Marco Albini and Antonio Piva. She was also an influential lecturer at the Polytechnic University of Milan, where she left a profound mark. The partnership between Albini and Helg represents one of the most fruitful and enduring collaborations in 20th-century Italian design, where architecture and design converge in a coherent, elegant, and timeless vision.
