ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Achille Castiglioni

Achille Castiglioni is one of the essential names in the history of Italian design. Born in Milan in 1918 and trained as an architect at the Polytechnic University of Milan, he began his professional career in the family studio alongside his brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo. His vision—shared for years with Pier Giacomo—profoundly transformed the relationship between form, function, and popular culture, giving rise to objects that have become part of the collective imagination of modern design. His work for companies such as Flos, Zanotta, and Alessi revealed a playful, rational, and innovative approach, capable of revaluing everyday objects from a new perspective.

With over one hundred designed pieces and eight Compasso d'Oro awards, Castiglioni left a legacy that transcends generations. Classics such as the Luminator lamp, the Mezzadro stool, and the Parentesi lamp are now emblems of functional design with an experimental spirit. His work, exhibited in museums such as MoMA, reflects a balance between technical rigor, humor, and sensitivity to humanity. From his studio in Piazza Castello, now a museum, Achille Castiglioni redefined the art of design, combining intelligence, curiosity, and a profound understanding of use and time.
