ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Joe Colombo

Visionary, experimental, and profoundly modern, Joe Colombo was a key figure in 20th-century Italian design. Born in Milan in 1930, he began his career in painting and sculpture before dedicating himself entirely to architecture and design. His avant-garde artistic training, influenced by groups such as the Movimento Nucleare and the MAC, resulted in an aesthetic language where technology, functionality, and a futuristic vision of living were central elements. In 1959, he founded his own studio with his brother Gianni, initiating a series of formal and material investigations that would forever change the way domestic furniture was conceived.

Colombo explored design as an integrated system, with multifunctional pieces that redefined living space: from the famous Mini-Kitchen for Boffi to the Living Center Visiona I and his Total Furnishing Unit, presented at MoMA in 1972. He created iconic pieces such as the Elda chair, the Tube armchair, and lamps like Spider (awarded the Compasso d'Oro), Acrilica, and Topo, which are now part of permanent collections in museums around the world. His untimely death in 1971 did not prevent him from leaving an indelible mark as one of the great innovators of modular design and a forerunner of contemporary lifestyles.
