ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Gastone Rinaldi

Gastone Rinaldi was born in Padua on November 16, 1920. In 1916, his father, Mario, founded RIMA, a company dedicated to the production of metal furniture. Although Gastone enrolled in the Faculty of Economics, his true passion was design and sports. In 1948, together with his brother Giorgio, he took over the reins of the family business. During this period, he met Gio Ponti and in 1950 designed the chairs for the Hospital Section of the 9th Milan Triennale. At that same Triennale, he also presented the DU9 chair. His creations were regularly published in the magazine Domus.

In 1952, he participated in the 30th Milan Fair, in the section curated by Alberto Rosselli, Ettore Sottsass, and Marco Zanuso. Later, together with Zanuso, he designed the armchairs for the Piccolo Teatro in Milan. In 1954, he won the prestigious Compasso d'Oro for the DU30 chair, a milestone in his career. He also participated in the American venture of Altamira, one of the first American companies to work with Italian designers, alongside names such as Ponti, Parisi, De Carli, and Gardella. He also collaborated with Carlo Mollino on the design of chairs for the Molinette Hospital in Turin.

In 1957, his DU41 armchair won a silver medal at the 11th Milan Triennale. However, internal relations at RIMA became complicated, and in 1974, Rinaldi founded his own company, Thema. In 1978, he was nominated for the Compasso d'Oro for the Arianna armchair, and again in 1981 for the Dafne folding chair. Despite its success, Thema closed in 1989. Gastone Rinaldi died in Padua on March 2, 2006, leaving a lasting legacy in furniture design.
