Vico Magistretti

Vico Magistretti was one of the great Italian architects and designers of the 20th century, a pioneer of Italian Design and creator of timeless pieces that still define the modern imagination. Born in Milan in 1920 into a family of architects, he trained in the post-war period under the influence of Ernesto Nathan Rogers, developing a design vision committed to functionality, formal clarity, and mass production. His collaborations with firms such as Cassina, Artemide, Flou, and Oluce resulted in true icons like the Eclisse lamp (Compasso d'Oro 1967), the Maralunga sofa, and the Nathalie bed—works that have withstood the test of time with elegant naturalness.

Magistretti conceived of design as a close dialogue between creator and manufacturer, where conceptual rigor and industrial quality came together to make everyday objects durable, beautiful, and accessible. Throughout his five decades of activity, he also developed a restrained and modern architecture, deeply rooted in the Milanese cityscape. His legacy extends beyond his forms: it represents an essential, honest, and profoundly human design philosophy that continues to inspire generations of creators.
