ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni

Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni formed one of the most influential creative partnerships in 20th-century Italian design. United by a shared vision of experimentation, functionality, and irony, they transformed everyday objects into icons of modern design. From the 1940s onward, the brothers worked researching materials and techniques with the aim of redefining the design process, incorporating the rigor of architecture, the spontaneity of gesture, and extraordinary formal clarity. Together they created pieces such as the Parentesi lamp and the Mezzadro stool, which are now part of the permanent collections of museums such as MoMA, the Vitra Design Museum, and the Pompidou Centre.

Pioneers in the use of design as a cultural and social tool, they were also driving forces in academic thought. Achille was a professor at the universities of Turin and Milan, and co-founder of the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (ADI). The solo exhibition organized by European museums between 1984 and 1986 cemented his international legacy. With a total of nine Compasso d'Oro awards, his work not only defined an era, but continues to serve as a benchmark for understanding the power of honest, intelligent, and profoundly human design.
