ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Thau & Kallio

Jakob Thau and Sami Kallio share a deep fascination with materials and methods, with a clear focus on the components that make up any design. Their affinity for wood and handcrafting drives them to revitalize Nordic storytelling, applying classic techniques to new expressions.

Sami Kallio, born in Finland and raised in Sweden, earned his MA in design from the Gothenburg School of Design and Crafts. Trained as a cabinetmaker, he fuses his deep knowledge of wood and artisanal skills with modern manufacturing methods, recontextualizing classic concepts in a contemporary setting.

Jakob Thau, born in Sweden and raised in Denmark, also trained as a cabinetmaker and earned his master's degree from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design. Thau focuses on the timeless, drawing on a vast repertoire of traditional techniques, primarily woodworking, while exploring both familiar and novel materials in his quest to create accessible, functional, and easy-to-love designs.

One of the fruits of their design collaboration is Betty, a contemporary chair with a classic soul. Named after Copenhagen's Betty Nansen Theatre, originally built in 1857 in a wooden pavilion, the chair transcends the confines of the theater. It is the result of Thau and Kallio's fascination with the need for comfortable seating in any space, regardless of its purpose.
