ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Anderssen & Voll

Oslo-based Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll have been instrumental in putting Norway on the global design map since joining forces in 2009. Their studio, Anderssen & Voll, has received numerous international awards for its work in furniture, lighting, and home accessories, including the Wallpaper* Design Awards, the Red Dot and iF awards, in addition to several "Best Designs" and "Best Designers of the Year" accolades. Despite these achievements, they approach each new project with a sense of freedom.

Rather than defining and limiting themselves to a specific approach, Anderssen & Voll prefers to remain open-minded, developing designs driven by emotions. Their primary desire is to create designs with soul, to bring life to the inanimate. “We’re not dogmatic about this,” Anderssen and Voll say. “We stay open-minded. We start designing and see how a piece takes on its own personality. It’s almost like bringing it to life.”

This ideal approach proved perfect for a project at Copenhagen's Langelinie Pavilion, a multifunctional experience emporium housed in a modernist building designed in the late 1950s. The Pavilion Chair, which they created for this space, both disrupts and embraces the principles of modernism. It's fluid, elegant, and stackable, with a curved plywood base and seat. “We wanted to bridge the gap between old and new with a curvaceous chair, rather than the rigid lines often found,” Anderssen and Voll add. “With its slender lines flowing through the air, it has a poetic quality. Almost like a delicate string that has come undone.”
