ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Hvidt & Mølgaard

Known for the simplicity and detailed craftsmanship of their designs, Peter Hvidt (1916–1986) met Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907–1993) at the Kunsthåndværkerskolens Snedkerskole, where he first studied with her and later taught alongside her. The two formed a close friendship from the start and achieved their first success as a design duo by winning the Swedish Slöjdföreningen competition in 1943. Pioneers of the knock-down furniture system we know and love today, they honed their skills in creating clickable furniture with the Portex series of 1944. This collection, made entirely from Danish beechwood, was created for export, with the aim of aiding in the reconstruction of war-ravaged European countries. The success of their AX lounge chair in 1950 marked a pivotal moment for the pair. Its sleek, controlled silhouette not only cemented its leadership in Danish modernism, but the use of laminated wood allowed the chair to be produced on a mass scale and exported internationally. This visionary approach to industrialized production paved the way for a new movement that combined classic craftsmanship techniques with the creation of affordable, beautifully crafted furniture. Hvidt & Mølgaard continued to design countless pieces over the years, many of which became icons of the era, establishing a precise and timeless aesthetic using organic materials. Today, their works are exhibited at renowned institutions such as MoMA, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Gallery in Melbourne, and the Design Museum in Copenhagen.
