Hvidt & Mølgaard

Pioneers of mid-20th-century Danish design, Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen founded Hvidt & Mølgaard in Copenhagen, marking an era with their understated, functional, and refined approach. Their work is characterized by formal clarity and a precise aesthetic, combining classic craftsmanship with an industrial mindset that enabled mass production without sacrificing quality. The launch of the iconic AX chair in 1950 represented a key milestone in their career, both for its elegant design and for the innovative use of laminated wood, which facilitated its international export and broadened the horizons of Scandinavian design.

Both designers had a strong technical background: Hvidt trained as a cabinetmaker at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, while Mølgaard-Nielsen studied furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, under the tutelage of Kaare Klint. The duo's work has not only stood the test of time but remains relevant today, and is exhibited at prestigious institutions such as New York's MoMA, Melbourne's National Gallery, and Copenhagen's Design Museum.
